2025 VCDR Statement of Principles

Vermont Coalition for Disability Rights Statement of Principles

Addressed to the Vermont Legislative Body of 2025 Dear Legislators,

On behalf of the Vermont Coalition for Disability Rights, we want to thank you for your commitment to the state of Vermont and to all Vermonters, including those of us living with disabilities. Considering the immense work ahead and rising federal pressures, VCDR presents this statement of principles, which we hope will guide your deliberations—both in your minds and in your hearts. We ask that you put people first and work to improve the lives and circumstances of your fellow community members.

As you embark on this task, we know you will encounter diverse opinions, emotions, and strategies regarding complex and sensitive issues that impact us all. The session will move quickly, and you will be asked to consider critical issues in what may feel like the blink of an eye. We offer our support, expertise, and lived experience to help navigate these decisions and ensure the needs of Vermonters with disabilities are fully considered.

Thank you for your dedication and for keeping the disability community in mind as you do this important work.

Principle One

Disability is a natural part of the human experience. It should not be justification for prejudice.

Principle Two

We all rely on community, so put community first, not institutions.

Principle Three

Everyone deserves their autonomy, please support self-determination & independent living.

Principle Four

Forced treatment is violence not treatment. Treatment should start with preventing harm.

Principle Five

All people deserve dignity and respect regardless of the need for supports. Dignity includes independent living to the greatest extent possible, with access to basic needs, such as education, food, housing, and employment.
